Personally, I don't usually make too much of this day. Don't get me wrong, I don't think there's anything wrong with people doing something special to celebrate the day. It's nice for people to be thoughtful and nice for a change. But how about the other 364 days of the year?
We should be thoughtful and considerate every day. I don't mean just going out and buying things, but making an effort to really show the people we care about that we appreciate them. Nice gestures are still nice (or even nicer) when they're not expected.
It's also difficult to ignore all of the marketing that goes on for days like this. It seems as if every company has the "perfect" gift. A lot of this "special day of affection" talk is another opportunity for businesses to sell, and they always succeed. Buying chocolates, flowers, jewelry and/or dinner today doesn't make up for being an ass the rest of the year.
