It's over. Spain are the new champions of Europe. And in my opinion, a very well deserved victory not only for their nation, but also for those who appreciate the beautiful game.
At the start, I picked Holland to win it all. They choked. Spain was consistently effective, and being the only undefeated team in the tournament is proof. Out of all of the countries in Europe, I enjoy Spanish football the most. And not just because my favorite club team hails from there. Some prefer the speed, strength and intensity of England, but I'll choose the class, passing, finesse and intelligence of Spain over any other European country. I'm not trying to criticize anyone, this is simply the style I was taught and the one I stay faithful to.
This isn't about bandwagoning Spain because they won. Today is a very happy day for me because attacking football prevailed over lame defensive tactics. This game is about playing "to win", but lately most teams play "to not lose." As the game evolves, it seems to forget the ideals that make it the best sport in the world. Today, we were all reminded of them: the fans, the heart, the passion, the desire to score goals and the joy of winning as a team. In my world, it doesn't get any better than this.
I could literally go on all day about this, but I'll spare you the boredom. If you took the time to read this, thank you.
And Spain, thank you as well.
